WHO WE ARE

Halfway Home Pet Adoptions offers a wide range of programs & services; including the sheltering of lost and homeless animals, pet adoption and placement, spay/neuter programs, low cost vaccinations, volunteer opportunities and much more.

Halfway Home Pet Adoptions operates as the municipal shelter for the entire Kansas City Missouri area.  As such, we receive an unfortunately sizeable number of cats and dogs each day.  When space becomes limited the shelter is forced to euthanize animals.  The shelter does not currently operate as a no-kill facility.

Halfway Home Pet Adoptions receives animals from "Kansas City Animal Health and Public Safety Division" (Animal Control), and from public drop-offs. Animal Control responsibility is to protect citizens from the dangers and nuisances of uncontrolled animals and to keep animals safe from mistreatment and abuse. Halfway Home Pet Adoptions's role is to increase pet adoptions and decrease euthanasia. Promoting, motivating and enforcing responsible pet ownership is also one of our most important goals.

Because we operate as Kansas City animal pound, we do not decline any animal intake from KCMO residents. Half Way Home Pet Adoptions does everything possible to find loving homes for the countless dogs and cats brought into the shelter everyday, but sadly, the incoming rate of unwanted pets is much higher than the amount of available homes. Our euthanasia rate is high as we have to make room for new arrivals on a daily basis.

Halfway Home Pet Adoptions collaborates with several rescue groups in the region to get animals transferred. If you are a "licensed" rescue group and would like to offer assistance, please contact us: email@petshalfwayhome.com. (816) 921-0201.

The Halfway Home Pet Adoptions facility is open for adoptions 7 days a week. Strays and lost dogs are kept at the shelter for five days before they are offered for adoption or euthanised.

Pets relinquished by their owners are put up for adoption or euthanised the next day.

The fee to adopt a dog is $100, which includes spaying or neutering, and necessary vaccinations. The adoption fee of highly adoptable pets may be increased to help us raise money for needy animals. We lower the fee of dogs and cats that have been at the shelter too long in order to increase their chance of getting adopted.

Stray cats are kept at the shelter for two business days before they are offered for adoption or euthanised. The adoption fee for a cat is $65, which includes spaying or neutering, and necessary vaccinations.

Please see our "adoption information" page for additional info, or call the shelter at: (816) 921-0201.

To Halfway Home Pet Adoptions;

I just wanted to tell you how wonderful it is to see how the shelter has turned around since it was privatized. I am just an outsider looking in who has read news articles and looked at your Web site, but just from that I can tell the great things that are happening there and how much everyone cares.

I love that you're letting the kitties out of their cages and getting outside runs for the dogs. I love the wonderful descriptions of the animals on Petfinder. I love how you're really trying to get every pet a home. The euthanasia rate in this city disgusted me for years, and I applaud your efforts and hope someday you can be a totally no-kill shelter.

I know it must not have been easy to come in and clean up that place. In fact, I imagine it must be pretty overwhelming. I just wanted you to know your work is very appreciated, especially by people like me who care deeply about animals.

Sincerely,
Sarah
