An Adult Or A Puppy

You have decided to open your heart and your home to a dog. Now you need to decide whether to adopt an adult or a puppy. Each has advantages and disadvantages and the final decision is based on your family's needs and lifestyle.

Advantages of an Adult

Adult dogs are full-grown when they are adopted. You don't have to guess how big the dog will get. What you see is what you get. The trial-and-error learning phase is already over. The adult dog is usually housebroken and sleeps through the night. He doesn't need so many trips to the vet and has outgrown his impulse to take everything in his mouth and chew on it. An older dog, especially one who has left a hard life or spent some time in a shelter, will be more appreciative and grateful than you can ever imagine. An older dog who has experienced homeless will never take your love and care for granted.

Advantages of a Puppy

Puppies are adorable and entertaining.

Adopting an adult dog from an animal shelter or rescue organization can be a marvelous alternative to raising a puppy and very gratifying experience. Some shelter and rescue dogs are well-trained and in dire need of a loving home. Some dogs are purebred; most are mixed breeds. The key to finding a good shelter or rescue dog is selection. Take the time to research breed traits and talk to an "Adoption Counselor" about your needs, requirements and home environment. Shelter staff will help you make the right decision and choose a candidate that will be a good match for your lifestyle.
